2012 Atlantic Hurricane Season
The 2012 Atlantic Hurricane Season had nineteen named storms, ten of which were hurricanes (one major hurricane – Hurricane Michael), and this was the third consecutive year with this many named storms. Between the years 2003, 2004 and 2005, each of these seasons had fifteen-plus named storms. Since 1851, only two seasons, 1933 (20 named storms) and 2005 (28 named storms), have been busier than the last three years (2010, 2011 and 2012).
This season was more active than predicted, and two storms, Alberto and Beryl, formed before the official start of hurricane season, an occurrence not seen since 1908. Tropical Storm Beryl made landfall in Jacksonville Beach, Florida on May 28, 2012 and was the strongest landfall in the United States for any pre-season Atlantic tropical cyclone on record. Well over half of the tropical storms that developed in the season made landfall or directly impacted land.
Hurricane Sandy (a Category 2 hurricane) is the second costliest hurricane in recorded history (Hurricane Katrina in 2005), causing at least $65.5 billion in damage and 253 deaths. Though Hurricane Sandy caused significant damage to Florida’s beaches due to increased surf and coastal flooding, Florida was fortunate to be spared the bulk of the wrath of this extensive storm. It only takes one. It is never too early to get your family plan together, and to have storm supplies on hand. There are also steps that you can take now to better prepare your home against next hurricane season’s winds and water. Visit www.FloridaDisaster.org for more information. BE PREPARED!
